After a family experience with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Kate and her family created the Getty Owl Foundation to help families and fight SMA, the #1 genetic killer of young children.
The foundation assists people and families affected by SMA, fundraises to advance SMA research, and raises SMA awareness. As part of her story, we’re inviting you to a Humani group run/walk not only for a good cause, but to support Kate and her organization.
Life got a bit complicated after my daughter Getty was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy over six and a half years ago. Doctor visits, hospitalizations, 24/7 care gave me little time to relish in a role I thought I was ready for, the role of mother.
What I learned very quickly is that life and all it offers, is never guaranteed and I wanted to offer other families with children with SMA as much support as I could. I created the Getty Owl Foundation.
After announcing the creation of Getty Owl Foundation in 2011, we have been so overwhelmed by the outpouring of love. Sacramento as a community has been incredibly supportive and so willing to find ways to help spread the word about SMA.
I wanted to find an annual event we could host to bring awareness about SMA, but to also bring our Sacramento community together for a day to just celebrate life and family. The Getty Owl Run/Walk was founded for that exact purpose. One day out of the year, were we can positively bring the essence of family together, bring community together, help raise funds to support families affected by SMA, and also help donate to the fight to end SMA through research based studies. The choice of doing a run/walk was an easy one. I am an avid runner myself and I have found running to be such a blessing while also being my daughter’s caregiver.
Sunday, February 26th at Crocker Park, we will be hosting our 6th Annual Getty Owl Run/Walk. In the last six years, we have raised over $200k through our run/walk. It is a testament to what we do and a testament to our Sacramento community and the support they offer.
I am so thankful to have Humani Pilates as one of our sponsors this year.
I have been a part of the “tribe” since last January, and it has literally saved me mentally, physically, and spiritually.
It is easy to care for my daughter, but the physical and mental tool it takes on my body can wear me down without even realizing it. I never understood self-care until I came to Humani. I never realized that in order to be the best for her, I had to take care of myself. It has been such a joy to come to class twice a week. I feel refreshed after class and I feel more confident when I get home. There is something very powerful about resetting one’s brain and heart, even if it is for two hours a week. I am thankful for all of the ladies at the studio. The time and care they offer is so appreciated.
We’d like to invite you to support your fellow tribe member in the 6th Annual Getty Owl Foundation run/walk. Join Maria and Jenn as we represent Humani and our support for Kate, Getty and the entire SMA community.
