October is an exciting month at Humani Pilates as we get into the Halloween spirit with Wicked Workouts. These workouts are fun but also about taking your practice to a new level. This gives us a chance to look at our own individual practices, where we’ve been, where we are today and the journey ahead.
This month we’ll highlight another happy transformation of one of your teammates, Leticia Murphy. Learn more about her happy transformation through Pilates.
When did you decide to try Pilates?
I started doing Pilates videos in my early 20’s and remembered feeling great. Fast forward 20 years later after 3 back (failed) surgeries and a stimulator implanted in my back, I finally decided to make the commitment to try again and stick with it because I was miserable and nothing else was helping with my pain.
What was life like before Pilates, what is life like now?
Life before (what life)? I was in constant pain, couldn’t wait to go home to medicate and go to sleep to take the pain away. This vicious cycle has caused depression and the worse part of it was that it took me away from being a mother, wife and just enjoying life and activities.
After: Words can’t even describe my confidence, I enjoy my kids, husband, and activities more. I’m about 90% pain-free. During my workouts, I’m 100% pain-free. In fact, if I don’t go to my class my pain comes back, which is a constant reminder to me how important Pilates is for my body.
What advice would you give someone thinking of trying Pilates for the first time?
Stick with it! It will be the best thing that you can do for your body. I’m walking proof of how much it has changed my life for the better.
What is one thing your classmates should know about you?
I’m trying to keep up with all of them and they all give me motivation and determination so I thank them! LOL I’m also excited to be part of their tribe and look forward to getting to know everyone as time goes on. I’m pretty shy and to myself so it takes a while for me to engage.
When not at Humani, where are we most likely to find you?
Working, being a wife and mother and constantly trying hard to make lifestyle changes to help me be a better person for them. I want to be a positive role model for my children and to show them how important it is to take care of their bodies. Working on changing my thought process of being more positive and being spiritually connected. Words can’t describe how grateful my family and I are for Humani and how it has helped me deal with chronic pain. I will continue to work towards being extremely healthy and have a goal of looking like the cute instructors.
What class at the studio is your favorite? Why? (Joy, Balance, Reboot, Energy, Bliss)
Most of my classes have been joy because of the schedule, and as I’m getting stronger my goal is to try all classes. I just started Pilates April 1st and on one hand, I’m extremely anxious to try everything right away because I have a hard time when I’m told no, you can’t do this right now. However, I started with one on one sessions twice a week, and now I’m going 5 days a week. I just started going to Energy and on sometimes I get discouraged because it is hard for me but I’m too determined to continue and get better at it.
With an injury, I have learned that I have to listen to the professionals and my body. I want to be able to do everything right away but have learned to be patient and that over time I WILL be able to do it all.
What is your favorite piece of equipment? Why? (Mat, Reformer, or Chair)
I love the reformer and chair for many reasons. I feel the release in my back with the reformer and the chair is hard but I know I’m building muscle because I feel the burn.
Stay tuned, we’ll be sharing more happy transformations with you each month.
